The Month of Thanks Challenge was held over the month of November to give lensmasters a chance to be thankful, raise awareness about hunger and make lenses to benefit hunger related Squidoo Charities.

The challenge is being done to help us realize that even in the midst of everything that is going on, we still have a lot to be thankful. The month of November, the month of Thanksgiving is a good time to stop, take a moment and give thanks.

About the Challenge

We had a lot of great lenses submitted for a Month of Thanks and the five hunger related charities, over 60 lenses.

7 – Oxfam America
7 – Planet Gumbo

Topics ranged from serious, like the winning lenses for a Month of Thanks Feed The Hungry from pmolinero, to heart-felt like  Giving Thanks and Giving Back from Starving Artist (from Angelina) and even to “The Worst Lens Ever Made” (from Mortira).

Pmolinero plans to “donate $0.05 for every comment left on the Feed the Hungry lens from now until Thanksgiving, 27th of November 2008.”

Still Time to be Thankful

Even though the winning lenses have been announced, there is still time left in November to be thankful. You can Share What You are Thankful for in this Month on the lens or post why you are thankful in the Month of Thanks thread in the Squidu forums.

I am very thankful and grateful to all who participated in the Month of Thanks Challenge.

I had a lot of fun creating this 15 Squid Gifts lens. The lens was an idea that I came up with to celebrate lens # 100, but didn’t get it completed until I reached lens # 200.

Christmas Gifts for Squidoo Lensmasters and Squid Lovers was created:

First to honor reaching lens #200
Second to benefit Planet Gumbo and
Third and entry for the Month of Thanks Challenge.

This was the question that I set out to answer in the Ways to Recycle Campaign Signs lens.

I was going to blog this week for My Green Doc Blog, but a post by Bonnie on the So You Want To Be A Giant Squid? blog spurred me on to create an entire lens.

Just yesterday it was announced that Squidoo is going to give away up to $80,000 to charity by October 15, 2008.

The money has been collected by saving up 5% of their total income and now they are asking for your help in giving some of it away!

Anyone who visits The $80,000 Squidoo Charity Giveaway lens has a chance to decide which of the many deserving Charities and NonProfit partners will benefit.

Here are the rules.

• Each vote counts as a $2.00 donation to the charity.
• Each person can only vote once for your Squidoo partner charities, in the poll on The $80,000 Squidoo Charity Giveaway lens page.

Vote for your favorite charity, but pick carefully. You can only vote once.

You can encourage your friends to vote also.

Vote soon. Once they get 40,000 votes, the money will be divided.

I am equally pleased to announce that also on Friday September 19, 2008 the  Blankets for Soldiers and Veterans lens was selected as the top lens in the My Good Deed for 9/11 Charity Challenge and announced on the Squidoo Activists Blog, We are Changing the World.

Blankets for Soldiers and Veterans lens benefits Soldiers’ Angels and their different Blanket Projects. There are three different types of blankets:

Blanket of Hope – for those who have been wounded.
Blanket of Belief – for those who are currently serving.
Blanket of Gratitude – for our veterans who have already served.

If you can sew, knit, crochet consider getting involved and making one of these special gifts for those who serve, or those who have served.

Solders’ Angels even offer an option of a no sew kit, for those who don’t feel very creative or donating directly to Soldiers’ Angels.

Think about the soldiers who may be facing a Holiday season without loved ones and do what you can to participate in the Blankets for Soldiers programs. You can also donate directly to Soldiers’ Angels on the lens. If you know any crafters, pass on the information to them.

You can do something good today and Join the Squidoo Activist My Good Deed Charity Challenge for 9/11. It is simple to participate, just make a lens to benefit any of your favorite charities and add it to the My Good Deed Plexo.

My contribution was to create a lens that benefits Dog Tags for Kids, Dog Tags for Kids Link Children with Their Deployed Parents.

Dog Tags for Kids is a nonprofit organization created to show support for the troops and their families. I felt it was an appropriate charity to support, since these families are being separated as a result of 9/11.

Dog Tags for Kids supplying for FREE specially engraved Dog Tags to service members that can be sent home to their children and link their deployed parents.

I used the new Donations Module, so you can make a direction donation to their cause. I tested it out with my own donation from last month’s Squidoo earnings.

The lens also looks at how linking objects or personal symbols can be used to help people cope during times of loss or in this case time of separation.

I am please to report that the Healthy School Fundraisers lens was this week’s Favorite Giant Squid Lens. The lens was developed as one of the lenses for the Squidoo Activist’s Virtual Bake Sale. I was inspired to look for healthier alternatives so did one lens on Healthy School Fundraisers and a second lens on Healthy Bake Sale Options.

Having the Healthy School Fundraisers lens featured is perfect timing with everyone going back to school at the end of the month it is perfect timing for this lens to be featured.

I am hoping that a lot of parents will read through the lens and start “thinking outside of the box” for fundrasiers this year.

The We Can Solve It lens was judged to by the community to be the winning Giant Squid Community Showcase Lens for the week.

According to the blog,

This weeks winning lens in the Choose Your Favorite Giant Lens Contest is We Can Solve It by Comfortdoc. The We Campaign is a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection and Kirsti has done an amazing job showcasing this charity.

Her lens includes numerous videos that champion the environment, I especially like the one from Al Gore. The We Can Solve it lens donates to the Squidoo Charity Fund, Global Giving and Earthjustice.

Thanks guys for helping spread the word.

In addition, “We Can Solve It” was the one of the recipients of the Squids Choice Award for the Month of July where the theme was “Going Green” along with my other green related lens Save Energy – You Have the Power.

Today, August 3 is the last day to enter your Virtual Concert in the Virtual Concert Week Series.

Getting involved is simple:

1. Pick a Group
2. Pick a Charity
3. Stage a Virtual Concert

I’ve got a Virtual Concert lens, now what?

1. Submit your lens to the Virtual Concert Group, the Bands that Give Back and if you are an Activist to the Squidoo Activist Group.
2. Get in touch with a Squidoo Activist and have them submit the lens to Anne.
3. Submit your lens to the Add Your Virtual Concert to the List Plexo (Note that the plexo is a bit wiggy this morning, but add it anyway.)
4. Visit the other Virtual Concerts that other people have created, rate them, favorite them and leave a message.

In this week-long event, lensmasters are encourage to create a Virtual Concert lens by their favorite musicians and musical acts, for their favorite charity or charities.

The deadline for entering has been extended to August 3. Winning Lens will be the Lens of the Day on Monday.
